HDD are delighted to be working for Lambeth Council alongside Donald Insall Associates to deliver the National Heritage Lottery Fund programme for repair and conservation work at West Norwood Cemetery. One of London’s large ‘Magnificent Seven’ cemeteries, West Norwood was established in 1836 to relieve the overcrowding caused by the huge increase in the capital’s population during the 19th Century. The Grade II* listed cemetery is home to 69 listed monuments, many of which have become run down in recent years.
The repair and conservation works include:
- A new Visitor Centre, formed from the remodeling and extension of the existing lodge building will also accommodation for bereavement service staff
- Two significant new pedestrian entrances at Hubbard Road and Robson Road to provide better access to the cemetery
- Restoration of 16 Grade II* & Grade II listed monuments and their subsequent removal from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register
- Conservation and repair of the Grade II* listed St. Stephens Chapel, to facilitate use as a gallery and public events space
- Improved signage and new way-finding aids
- Major infrastructure works to Listed boundary walls, drainage and carriageways
All work will be delivered whilst the site continues to operate as an active cemetery and crematorium. Increased and improved management will protect and enhance the cemetery’s biodiversity, whilst still respecting and celebrating its important heritage.
