Streatham Cemetery Re-use of Graves

Founded in 1892 the cemetery was originally opened by the Streatham Borough Burial Board in 1893 and received its first burials in 1894. The cemetery came into the ownership of Lambeth Council in 1965 having previously been managed by Wandsworth Council.

HDD have worked alongside Lambeth Council to develop a pilot project for the re-use of graves, so that burial can continue in Streatham cemetery.  Following an extensive screening and consultation process areas of public graves in the cemetery have been identified as potentially suitable for re-use.

HDD have assisted Lambeth Council with:

• Preparation of a Conservation Statement;
• Researching burial records to identify suitable areas of the cemetery for re-use of graves;
• Assisted with legal processes, notices and consultation;
• Developed layout designs for the re-use areas;
• Managed a number of site investigations and surveys;
• Written a Policies, Procedures and Protocols document for re-use of graves;
• Prepared a Faculty application for the re-use of graves;
• Prepared new statutory plans for the re-used burial areas;
• Worked alongside the ICCM (Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium; Management) to develop training for bereavement service staff in the re-use of graves.
