Lôn Gwyfrai Multi Use Route

Client: : Snowdonia National Park Authority Location: : Beddgelert, North Wales Dates: : 2012-2013 Value: : £450,000

HDD were commissioned by Snowdonia National Park Authority to design a brand new multi-purpose route in the heart of Snowdonia National Park.  The Rhyd Ddu to Beddgelert Multi-user Route is a new 6.5km long multi-purpose combined route for use by walkers, cyclists and horse riders.  The entire route lies within the National Park, with part of the route going through a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and a Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

The works were designed to fit into the landscape as seamlessly as possible, with minimal impact on protected habitats.  HDD undertook all detailed design, liaison with Natural Resources Wales, National Park Planning Authority and the Highways Authority. HDD then managed the tender process, and oversaw the on-site works under an NEC form of contract.

The completed works included:

  • a new road crossing with a bespoke coral design on the A4085,
  • more than 4km of brand new constructed path sections through the upland landscape,
  • 3 new bridges at river crossings,
  • a bespoke hand railing / safety fencing along an existing elevated mineral causeway,
  • numerous stone culverts and stream crossings.

The project was Highly Commended at the 2014 Landscape Institute Awards.

The judges said:

‘the sensitivity of the landscape design ensures the path makes a great contribution to the Park, and enhances the experience of the people who use it’
