HDD have been appointed by Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust to work alongside lead consultants Chambers Conservation to provide masterplanning, options appraisal and conservation management services. The project is aimed to assist in the understanding of the current and future conservation, care, use and development of Gwrych Castle and grounds so as best to deliver the Trusts vision and mission for the long term.
Gwrych Castle is Grade 1 listed and stands in 250 acres of gardens and grounds. Since 1924 the castle had fallen into to decline. However, in 1997 the Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust has consistently sought to protect the Castle from the risk of physical deterioration and from arson and vandalism and, although some consolidation and urgent repairs have been undertaken, the condition of the main Castle remains perilous. In summer 2018, the Castle was placed on the market and the Trust was successful in raising the funds required and effecting the purchase of the site to secure its future.
Gwrych Castle is recognised as one of Wales’ most important and significant buildings at risk. The wider Estate has significant remains from many previous centuries; defensive, domestic and industrial.
